Racecars and timepieces have always paired together beautifully. There
is something about the power of a racecar and the prestige of wearing a
fine watch that has evolved into a culture and style of it's own in the
luxury watch world.
This year, Chopard has announced the latest version of their Grand Prix De Monaco Historique (“GPMH”) chronograph. This 2016 Race Edition along with others in the same series are limited edition automotive inspired timepieces. Chopard incorporated the modern and vintage style to harmonize with the racing series held on the world famous Formula 1's Circuit de Monaco racetrack.
Like the Mille Miglia line, the Chopard GPMH was born from a passion for vintage cars and classic race culture. To make things even more legit, Chopard co-president Karl-Friedrich Scheufele and Chopard ambassadors Jacky Ickx all drove in the biennial event. With cars featured from pre-war Bugattis to 1970s Formula cars, this year's event was unforgettable.
But even beyond the racecar design, this watch has a lot to be desired. The 2016 Chopard Grand Prix De Monaco Historique 2016 Race Edition watches come in either 18k rose gold or steel and titanium. The rose gold has blue accents while the steel/titanium design features orange accents, and both have the same silver-toned snailed dial. And at 44.5mm, this large watch face does not go unnoticed.
While the past editions of this watch have remained impressive, the 2016 Chopard GPMH seems to be refined with more subtle color accents. Both timepiece models have a Chopard-finished ETA 7750, a COSC certified automatic chronograph movement and different style appeals. In our opinion the steel/titanium version is a little more sporty than the gold, but the gold has a vintage feel that really fits with classic racing.
